Video allegedly shows Android 3.0's TV-like screen shutoff

What is believed to be the first video (below) showing a handset powered by Android 3.0 (Gingerbread) has surfaced on Thursday. Courtesy of Phandroid, the video may not be much more than the blurry photo spotted on Monday, but it does show a piece of the OS that's more refined. Upon powering off, the screen "zaps" out not unlike an older tube TV shutting off.

Nvidia Tegra powered tablets show off Android skills (video)

Check out the performance of these Android tablets, powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 dual-core processors. Very impressive.

NTT's Hikari iFrame: Japan gets Android-powered, inexpensive tablet PC

NTT in Japan has just unveiled the Hikari iFrame, an Android tablet with an accessible price point. The device is also used as a digital picture frame and it comes with a 7 inch touch panel display, an SD memory card slot, a speaker and a USB port.

The device features a 7-inch touch-panel display, an internal battery, a speaker, an alarm clock, a USB port and an SD memory card slot. And yes, it can be used to access the web via Wi-Fi. In an attempt to appeal to casual web users, NTT East says it will make heavy use of widgets that just need to be tapped to display various content like the weather, recipes, or the latest news.

The Hikari iFrame will be released in Japan only (initially, at least) in the first half of fiscal 2010, which under the Japanese system means sometime between April and September next year. It will cost between $220 and $330, with NTT East saying the use of Android as the OS resulted in reducing costs by 20-30% per unit.

Here's a video showing the tablet in action:

ASUS Eee Pad Tegra 2 tablet pictured @ CES

ASUS made little fanfare about their EeePC Touch Series Tablet at CES 2010, leaving it hidden away in a cabinet at NVIDIA’s booth, but the latest rumors suggest that they’ll be unfurling the banners for it at Computex 2010 in June.

According to industry sources, the tablet will be known as the Eee Pad and it will use NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 chipset.

Otherwise details are scarce, though ASUS is believed to have awarded the manufacturing contract to Pegatron.

Prowave Android Tablet powered by Freescale

This is a cool looking Android Tablet running a customized Android user interface powered by the Freescale i.MX515 processor. It is manufactured by a Chinese OEM in Shanghai called Prowave.

Connectivity includes WiFi and 3G, together with a USB port and an integrated webcam, and Mastone have customized the standard Android UI with a number of new apps and widgets; some of those were in Chinese language only, however, so we couldn’t really tell what they did.

Performance was fair and build quality was very high, with a brushed metal body and solid feeling buttons, and only the resistive touchscreen proved a mild disappointment (since we’d like to have seen a capacitive panel).

Still, we’re guessing that will help Mastone keep the Prowave price down; so far we don’t know what that price will be, though given Freescale have said that their reference design could come in at around $200 we’re hoping for a similar level for this tablet.

Game Developers Conference 2010 organizers have announced that they are working together with Google "to celebrate and inspire the mobile and independent game development communities" by offering free Nexus One and Verizon Droid by Motorola phones to select attendees.

The newly announced offer, part of Google's outreach into the mobile phone space as it expands use of its Android operating system, is open to qualifying developers who register to attend GDC 2010 by February 4th, 2010.

The Game Developers Conference, as the world’s largest professional-only game developer event, has been at the center of the industry’s discussions on these topics.

It serves as home to major Summits such as the GDC Mobile/Handheld Summit and the Independent Games Summit, as well as the IGF Mobile competition to award handheld game innovation.

In recent years, the smartphone has become one of the most widespread and widely-used game platforms, and has proven particularly suited to independent developers experimenting with new and unusual gameplay.

As an official statement on the tie-in notes: "This makes conference attendees great potential developers of new content for phones using the Android operating system." Alongside the announcement, Google's Eric Chu has posted about Android's GDC 2010 presence on the official Android Developers weblog.

"At the GDC, we are constantly looking for ways to help the game development community learn and thrive. The mobile and independent game spaces having been providing so many of those opportunities for years now," said Meggan Scavio, event director of the Game Developers Conference. "We are so appreciative that we can better reach those goals by actually putting a new opportunity – Android-powered devices – into the hands of our attendees."

Early Bird rates for GDC 2010 end February 4. For more information about the 2010 Game Developers Conference, including the eight summits and the Android phone promotion, please visit the official Game Developers Conference website.

HTC Click video

Several intriguing Android-based handsets have rolled out recently, such as the HTC Hero and Samsung Galaxy, but the market demand for a more affordable Android device that would appeal to the broad public has been growing steadily. There's a good chance that the HTC Click, featured below, will be just that.

The handset has already caused some tongues to wag, but we hadn´t seen it action before the video appeared. Thanks to its creators, the Tihn Te website, we know more about the much anticipated device.

The HTC Click will feature smaller display than the Magic. The overall design is pretty appealing, although I think the owner himself is responsible for the fine dragon pattern details visible on the back panel.

The video reveals the software version is 1.50.999.0 and that the Click will come equipped with a 3.5mm jack. Unfortunately, it won´t be running Sense UI, but the standard Android interface that we know well from the Magic and G1.

The Magic that the Click is compared to in the video footage is running the HTC´s personalized interface.

Software Update Fixes the HTC Hero's Only Real Problem

Well, this changes things. Right after it came out, Matt from Gizmodo called the HTC Hero "tragically flawed."

Why? Because the otherwise fantastic Sense UI was realllly slooooow.
HTC, presumably run by competent, rational human beings, has fixed this. The new update, illustrated above, shows the now beautifully fluid UI experience.

Well done HTC!

HTC Hero / Lancaster running Android and "Rosie" UI launching on June 24th?

While the Economic Daily News doesn't cite any sources, its claim that HTC will launch its Android-powered Hero handset on June 24th makes a lot of sense.

Something's up on that day since we've already seen the press invite to a June 24th event in London, the same place that witnessed the launch of the HTC Touch Diamond last year.

The EDN reports two variations of the Hero: one without the QWERTY and another, the HTC Memphis (better known as the HTC Lancaster around AT&T) with full keyboard in tow.

Samsung I7500 phone: Hands On Video

Korean mobile phone maker Samsung announced not too long ago its first handset running under Google's Android operating system, the i7500, which should be launched with O2 later during the ongoing year, while also being expected to head towards T-Mobile's lineup under the name of Samsung Houdini, and which has now surfaced in a new video on the web.

The specifications of the phone should already be familiar to some of you, for it comes with quad-band GSM, tri-band 7.2Mbps HSDPA (900/1700/2100MHz) connectivity, as well as with a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen display that can offer a 320 x 480 pixel resolution, not to mention the WiFi capabilities, GPS receiver, or the 5-megapixel photo snapper.

Other capabilities of the handset include 8GB of internal memory, which is coupled with a microSD memory card slot that can offer users the possibility to add up to 32GB of storage space. What the Samsung i7500 adds new in comparison to the other Android-based mobile phones on the market is a standard 3.5mm jack.

The same as the other two Android phones available at the moment, namely HTC Dream and HTC Magic, the new Samsung device comes with a wide range of Google apps and services enabled, such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Calendar, and Google Talk, as well as My Location, Google Latitude or Street View.

Take a look at the video below to learn a few more things about the handset, but bear in mind that the device, though it looks quite nice and performs well enough, does not feature the software in its final state. There shouldn't be too long before the actual device is spotted on the shelves, as O2 announced recently that it planned on launching the Samsung i7500 as soon as June, which means that even more detailed info on the phone should become available at that time, so stay tuned to learn the news.
