More Android phones to hit Aussie shores in the next few months..

This month sees the launch of a new wave of Google phones in Australia. Most run the much-improved Android 2.0 OS.

First in Android's new wave is Motorola, which hopes its Google phones will spur a return to the glory days of the stylish, slim RAZR and, a decade before, the original Star Trek-style flip phone.

This week sees the launch of the Motorola Dext and Backflip on the Optus network.

Both complement the now-mandatory touchscreen with a compact QWERTY keypad. The Dext is a more conventional slider, while the Backflip uses a hinge to position its screen at a lean-back angle suitable for watching videos or even using as a bedside alarm clock.

Despite using a mid-range 530MHz processor and running last year's Android 1.5 operating system, the Dext and Backflip are snappy performers with their own appeal beyond the Android OS itself.

That's because both sport a customised interface known as Motoblur. This puts the social networking services of Facebook, Twitter and MySpace right on to the phone's home screen.

Instead of having to log into individual apps for each service to read messages, post updates and browse uploaded photo galleries, widgets on the Motoblur home page provide live feeds that are updated constantly over the 3G network.

Motoblur also integrates messages from these social networking sites, plus emails and SMS texts, into a single view.

This month Telstra will release its first Android smartphone, the HTC Desire, which will use its Next G network. The Desire ticks every box on the techno-lust list. There's a powerhouse 1GHz processor, the over-fresh Android 2.1 operating system, a five-megapixel camera, FM radio and a brilliantly crisp 9.4-centimetre AMOLED (active-matrix organic LED) screen. Unlike the iPhone and some other smartphones, the Desire supports Flash, so you don't have to miss out on most of the streaming video clips on news and entertainment websites.

HTC has also planted its own Sense user interface onto the Desire. Sense comes with dozens of classy widgets, integrates each contact's Facebook and Twitter details into your address book and includes a Friend Stream app that combines feeds from Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

Also sitting on the Android launch pad is Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10, which will arrive on Vodafone and Three in early May.

The Xperia X10 matches the HTC Desire with its 1GHz processor but ups the digital camera to eight megapixels, with snaps and video clips shown to best effect on the 10.2-centimetre screen.

Sony Ericsson's Timescape user interface ties together social networking updates with emails, phone calls and text messages but it's more akin to the Motoblur home screen than the top-to-tail experience of HTC Sense.

By mid-year we'll also see the palm-sized X10 Mini, which has a 6.3-centimetre touchscreen and, in the X10 Mini Pro version, a tiny slide-out keyboard.

Also poised for a likely mid-year release is Samsung's second-gen Android handset, the Galaxy S. This is another phone packing a 1GHz powerplant and a 10.2-centimetre screen but the enhanced Super AMOLED screen has to be seen to be believed. It's not just brighter but the colours have more density and punch, while also less reflective of sunlight and drawing less power (which means longer battery life).
Things are really starting to heat up!

HTC Supersonic spotted on video, to be announced on March 24?

Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has been long rumored to be working on a handset that will boast WiMAX connectivity and will also run under Google's Android operating system, and it seems that we might see the device launched in about one week from now. According to the latest news around the Internet, Sprint-Nextel CEO Dan Hesse is set to officially announce the new mobile phone at the CTIA 2010.

The device in question has previously emerged around the Internet as the HTC Supersonic, and now reports on it suggest that March 24 would be the date when all of its specifications are officially unveiled to the world.

HTC Supersonic (also dubbed HTC A9292 WiMax) features a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a 5 megapixel camera, HTC Sense user interface, GPS and Qualcomm’s 1 gigabertz (GHz) Snapdragon processor. The device will be targeted at enterprise and government markets besides consumers.

HTC announces 'Desire' and 'Legend' Android models

Today At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, HTC announced two new Android phones, the Desire, with its 3.7 inch OLED display, is closest to the Nexus One in terms of its technical prowess and features, and the Legend (see below), the successor to the Hero.

The Desire uses the same Qualcomm 1-GHz Snapdragon processor that we have seen in the Nexus One phone. It has a 3.7-inch display and weighs about 4.7 ounces. It also runs Android 2.1, the latest version of the Android operating system, first seen on the Nexus One.

The Desire, also known as HTC Bravo, supports Adobe Flash 10.1. It has a 5-megapixel camera with flash and geotagging capability, digital compass, FM radio, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

The phone has an optical joystick surrounded by a narrow button instead of a trackball in an attempt to improve usability.

Desire will initially be available in Europe and Australia before the second half of the year, says HTC.

The HTC Legend ups the ante in terms of design, says the company. The smartphone’s design is an extension of what we have seen with HTC Hero. The difference is in the softer look and the smooth surface milled from a single aluminum block also known as unibody construction.

It includes a 3.2-inch, OLED display and weighs 4.4 ounces (compared to 4.8 ounces for the iPhone 3G S and 4.5 ounces for the Nexus One). The Legend’s 600-MHz processor, though, is slower than the 1-GHz processor seen in the Nexus One.

Otherwise, the Legend mimics the Desire in terms of what it offers: a 5-megapixel camera, flash, geotagging, digital compass, FM radio, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

The Legend will also run the Android 2.1 operating system.

The Legend will initially be available in Europe through Vodafone around April, says HTC.

HTC Supersonic spotted in the wild? Has 4.3 inch screen

Reportedly, the HTC Supersonic is an Android 2.1 smartphone that has features similar to the ones of the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2: 4.3 inch WVGA touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 1GB of internal memory (like T-Mobile’s HD2), and a 5MP autofocus camera.

A notable difference (besides the different OS) is that the Supersonic has an OLED display, instead of a TFT one.

Here’s a couple more HTC Supersonic in the wild shots:

HTC's 2010 roadmap leaked!

It's almost becoming a tradition of HTC to have their upcoming lineup leaked, so without further ado, here's your late xmas present from me.

Legend: This looks to be the successor to the Magic (and possibly the Hero, too), featuring an 11.4mm metallic frame that we're already dying to hold along with a clickable optical pad, 5 megapixel AF cam, and 3.2-inch AMOLED display. Retail in March.

Salsa: We bet you've never seen a released Android handset quite like this one -- it's portrait QWERTY, not unlike Google's early Android prototype. 3.2 megapixels and an FM radio paired up with a Qualcomm MSM7225 at 528MHz. This one's coming in June.

Tide: Here's another Android form factor we haven't seen before -- full touch with a numeric keypad below the display. 3.2 megapixels and a 528MHz MSM7225 mean it should be pretty reasonable on a contract. April is the target release.

Buzz: This is a funky one in the same vein as the Tattoo with changeable backplates available in a variety of interesting designs; it's got full HSPA and a 5 megapixel AF cam with flash to boot.

Bravo: Now this is what we're talking about -- HTC marries Android with Snapdragon to make the device we suspect that many of us are going to be lusting for in 2010. It's got DivX support, 720p video capture through a 5 megapixel AF cam with flash, a mighty 3.7-inch AMOLED display, and that Qualcomm Snapdragon humming along at 1GHz. If all goes well, we should start to see this (hopefully everywhere) in April.

HTC sets its Hero free!

In a turnabout move HTC sidesteps all four Australian mobile carriers to launch its Android-powered Hero and Tattoo smartphones unlocked and for outright sale.

In an unexpected and possibly last-minute twist, HTC has sidestepped all carriers and all networks and will offer its new Hero and Tattoo smartphones for outright sale, unlocked, through mass market retailer Harvey Norman.

Earlier information indicated that Optus or one of its network-sharing partners would have the exclusive on both Android-powered handsets, but in what appears to have been a relatively last-minute change, HTC has gone direct to the market.

This is the first time the Taiwanese smartphone supremo has taken the retail-only path, with all of its previous smartphones offered through at least one carrier.

“We just wanted to get these handsets out there” Anthony Petts, HTC’s ANZ Director of Sales and Marketing told APC. Petts said that carrier deals are still under discussion.

“Further distribution channels will be announced in due course. We’re continuing to discuss (the Hero and Tattoo) with operators, but there’s nothing that I can say the the moment.”

Customers will be able to buy the Hero from Harvey Norman for $799 “by the end of November or early December”, with the more consumer-oriented Tattoo available “a few weeks after that” for $599.

The handsets can then be used with the customer’s desired network – either for the best network coverage or the carrier which offers the best deal.

However, given that the Hero covers only 2100MHz and 900MHz as 3G HSDPA bands, this rules out Telstra’s Next G network.

Customers of 3 can use the Hero and Tattoo on 3’s primary but limited-coverage 2100GHz network while customers of Optus and Vodafone can tap into both carriers’ primary 2100MHz and regional 900MHz networks.

Mystery HTC Android phone pics

Images of an unidentified HTC phone have been posted online, prompting speculation this could be the rumoured HTC Dragon.

The Dragon or "Zoom 2" is thought to be the Android counterpart to the recently announced high-end HD2 Windows Phone from HTC, although this device's design details don't look as slick as the HD2.

The leak, from a "ninja" source of theunlockr.com, reveals nothing about specs, but androidguys.com has stepped in with news of a Snapdragon processor, multi-touch display, 5MP camera, Wi-Fi and GPS on an Android 2.0 handset.

More details as they come to hand :)

Live Pics and Impresions Of The HTC Tattoo

The guys over at the HD Blog got their hands on a HTC Tattoo. The Tattoo will be the second Android Phone with HTC Sense and it should be launching at the end of October… apparently with 1.6 Donut according to the article.

They said the software version they had and used was “immature” until they got an update recently that greatly improved things. Exactly what the means I don’t know, but they put it through paces and said battery lasted 96+ hours.

They also enjoyed the integrated FM radio and said the resistive display sensitivity is good (but no multi-touch). While it is destined to be a mid to low-level Android Phone, it still remains in the Smartphone class because, well… that’s what Android is all about.

HTC Click introduced as the HTC Tattoo, a phone that can be personalised both inside and out

"Everyone wants their own phone to feel like it was specifically made for them. The Tattoo, with HTC Sense represents an easy way to shape your own distinct mobile experience and really make it your own,” claims Peter Chou, HTC's CEO. 'The HTC Tattoo ensures that you can create the most engaging and appropriate mobile experience through simple yet powerful personalization.'

Of course much of that is via the Sense interface, first seen on the HTC Hero and offering the option of several customisable homescreens, along with live feeds of essentials like Twitter and Facebook, plus email and weather (amongst other things) at a glance. Your life on a small touchscreen, no troublesome menus to flick through to stay informed.

If customising the screen isn't enough, how about doing the outside too? Yes, you can design and purchase your own unique covers or search and select from popular cover designs, although the latter doesn't quite offer the same uniqueness.

The phone itself is pretty compact at 4.17 inches tall by 2.17 inches wide by 0.55 inch thick and 3.99 ounces. The HTC Tattoo features a 2.8-inch QVGA resistive touch screen and comes with a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, a microSD expansion slot, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are also onboard.

Of course, it's also an Android phone, which means apps a-plenty, now including Spotify on the go, along with a top-notch web experience and if you have Gmail, email that's hard to beat.

So when can you get one? Well, the HTC Tattoo should be available in Europe first at the beginning of October, heading around the rest of the world in the months following. No news on a network as yet, but expect that information in a matter of days.

STC to release Middle East's first Android Powered Phone

yes, i know this is probably Indian, but give me a break.. it's a cool photo..

HTC Corporation has announced that Saudi telecom service provider STC will be the first operator in the Middle East to introduce the region's first Android(TM)-powered phone HTC Magic to Saudi customers.

The introduction of the HTC Magic in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the result of a successful relationship between STC and HTC.

STC, the largest telecommunication provider in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, covers an area of two million square kilometers, providing coverage to more than 100,000 kilometers of highways and 98 per cent of inhabitant areas across Saudi Arabia.

It has a larger customer base than any other provider in the Middle East - more than 19 million GSM, four million land line and one million DSL customers. To date, STC has won telecom licenses in Kuwait and Bahrain and acquired shares in companies in Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and South Africa and is continuing to develop its outreach to become a global service provider.

Rumour: HTC Touch HD2 will be an Android phone?

Original Touch HD on right, compared to iPhone

Looks like the successor to the Touch HD could be an Android phone with 3.8" Touchscreen and a 628MHz Qualcomm chip:

According to RegisterHardware, the device will get a faster Qualcomm processor at 628MHz instead of the 528MHz that HTC usually employs in its flagship devices and surprisingly, ditching WinMobile 6.1 (and the upcoming 6.5) to go with Google’s Android.

The Touch HD 2 will also allegedly feature a massive 3.8-inch touchscreen (no word on resistive or capacitive, but it is Android, so hopefully capacitive). There wasn’t any information revealed about future availability or pricing, but we’re sure that won’t be too far off now.

Here are the (rumoured) specs :

* Phone: GSM850, GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS900, UMTS2100.
* GSM and HSDPA connectivity.
* Screen 3.6 (some say 3.8) inch WVGA touchscreen display transflective TFT, 65536 scales.
* CPU: speed 628Mhz Qualcomm processor.
* Memory: 256MB RAM and 512 MB ROM.
* Slot: Micro SD.
* Bluetooth: Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR.
* Wireless LAN: 802.11b, 802.11g.
* AGPS.
* G Sensor.
* Headphones: 3.5mm.
* Main Camera: 8MP

..More details as they come to hand.
